Logging in

Sign in once and stay signed in

You sign in to Bite-Finder with your username and password. New to Bite-Finder? Create your account at bite-finder.com.

You only do this once. After the first time, Bite-Finder logs you in automatically every time you open it — you won’t see the login screen again on your computer.

You’ll only be asked to log in again if your account is used on another device. That’s expected — an account is used on one device at a time — so just log in again.

Forgot your password? Click Forgot password?, enter your username, and Bite-Finder opens the website in your browser so you can reset it.

Starting a case

Pick a preset and start your case

When you open Bite-Finder, the start screen shows a tile for each preset — a ready-made group of case settings for a common job, such as Static Occlusion, Dynamic Occlusion, Scan2Print, or xSNAP 360.

Pick the preset you need and click Start project. Bite-Finder sets the case up with those settings and takes you to the loading step.

In a hurry? Drag your scan files straight onto the window to start a case right away.

💡

You can set one preset to open automatically and skip this screen — see Preferences.

How Bite-Finder works

See the five steps every case follows

Bite-Finder guides every case through the same simple path, one step at a time:

  1. Load — bring in your scans.
  2. Configure — choose what you want Bite-Finder to calculate.
  3. Process — Bite-Finder does the work.
  4. Evaluate — check the result and compare it to the original.
  5. Save — export the files or send them to a lab.

You move forward when each step is ready, and you can always go back a step if you need to change something.

Once you’re comfortable with a single case, you can point Bite-Finder at a whole folder and let it work through many cases for you — see Batch processing and Serial processing.

Loading scans

Drop in your scans and let Bite-Finder sort them

Every case starts with your scan files. Drag them onto the window (or click to browse) — Bite-Finder recognizes each file and sorts it into Upper or Lower.

Only an upper and lower jaw are required. You can also add:

  • Attachment — merged with the jaw and included in the bite calculation.
  • Movable — moved together with the lower jaw into the bite.
  • Margin line — moved along with the jaw.
  • Tracked motion — your own pre-recorded jaw movement (optional; normally Bite-Finder calculates the motion for you).
  • Skull / CBCT — used occasionally, to improve dynamic-occlusion precision from the real anatomy.

A pre-op scan (taken before the tooth was prepared) can also be loaded — it preserves the original bite information that’s otherwise lost once a tooth is prepped.

If a file lands on the wrong jaw, open its menu to reassign it or switch jaws. Anything Bite-Finder can’t place is set aside as Unassigned so you can sort it — nothing is lost.

💡

Naming tip: clear names like upper / lower, uj / lj, or ok / uk help Bite-Finder put a scan on the right jaw automatically.

Once both jaws are loaded, click Continue. Supported files: STL, PLY, and 3Shape DCM.

Configuring the analysis

Choose what Bite-Finder should calculate for your case

Before processing, you choose what Bite-Finder should calculate. Each option builds on the one before it:

  • Static Occlusion — calculates the corrected bite.
  • Dynamic Occlusion — the bite, plus how it behaves as the jaw moves.
  • Scan2Print — the above, plus printable models.
  • xSNAP 360 — the above, plus xSNAP joints on the models, bringing the jaw motion into the physical print.

You can start from a saved preset instead of setting each option by hand.

Two settings worth knowing:

  • Maximal penetration — how deeply the surfaces may overlap. Set it to your preference.
  • Occlusion algorithm — choose Local when your scans are already close to the right bite position, or Global when the jaws start in completely different orientations.

When everything’s set, click Run.

ℹ️

You can reopen these settings any time during a case from the Settings button in the tool rail.

Processing

Watch your case run from upload to result

After you click Run, Bite-Finder uploads your case, calculates the result, and downloads it back. A progress window shows you which step it’s on.

You don’t have to wait around — when it’s finished, Bite-Finder takes you straight to the result.

Most cases are quick: around 10 seconds for a static bite, a little longer with dynamic motion, and up to about a minute for printable models — depending on how busy the servers are.

If a case fails (a server-side error), you can simply try again without starting over.

💡

While you wait, the progress screen can show a simple spinner, a fun animation, or even a small game — your choice in Preferences.

Evaluating the result

Compare your bite, then accept, rerun, or refund

This is where you check the adjusted bite before saving.

Compare with the original: hold Compare to flip back to the “before” bite, or use Split to see before and after side by side. If the case has jaw motion, play it back to watch the bite move.

Press Q for the quality report — a score for how well the bite fits.

When you’re ready, choose one:

  • Accept — you’re happy with it. Bite-Finder moves you to saving, where you download the files. (Once results can be downloaded, the case can no longer be refunded — but you can still re-run it.)
  • Rerun — try again with different settings, such as a new penetration value or fresh markings. Reruns on the same scans are free, and you can switch back to an earlier result to compare.
  • Refund — no result was usable. Your credit is returned. You won’t be able to open that result again without running the case, which costs a credit.

Each rerun creates another solution, and you can compare them in the sidebar.

Saving & exporting

Choose what to save and how to share it

When you accept a result, you decide what to save and where.

What to include:

  • Scans — your original jaw scans, moved into the corrected bite.
  • Models — the newly generated models for 3D printing.
  • Bite Scan — upper and lower merged into a single mesh of the full bite.
  • Report — the occlusion quality report as a PDF.
  • Case Launcher / Case Preview Launcher — for sharing the case (see below).

Format & position: choose the mesh file type, and — if your workflow needs it — a coordinate system. Input keeps everything as it came in (the usual choice); Exocad places the case into the exocad virtual articulator.

Where: save straight back into the case folder, or pick a destination. On the desktop app files are saved individually; in the browser they come as a single ZIP.

Instead of saving locally, you can send the case to a connected lab such as SprintRay — see Sending to a lab.

Sharing a case:

  • Case Launcher — opens the case from the cloud; the viewer signs in with an account in your organization.
  • Case Preview Launcher — a self-contained file that opens the case for viewing with no login, but can’t change or export it.

Marking tool

Guide the bite calculation by marking key areas

Marking lets you guide the bite calculation by highlighting areas of the scan. It’s usually done before you run a case, or on a rerun to refine the result.

Two ways to mark:

  • Brush — drag over the surface to paint an area. Adjust the brush size to work faster or more finely.
  • Lasso — draw an outline around a region and the whole inside is marked at once.

What each mark does:

  • Contact — tells Bite-Finder to try to create contact in this area.
  • Avoid — tells it to try to avoid contact here — useful to nudge the result toward a more clinically correct bite.
  • Ignore — leaves the area out of the calculation entirely and allows overlap there — mainly for scan artefacts.
  • Erase — removes a marking.

Prefer not to mark by hand? Automatic Marking tells teeth from gums for you and sets ignore areas automatically — and your own markings always take priority. Reset all clears everything.

Cut view

Slice through the bite to inspect hidden contacts

Cut view lets you slice through the jaws and study the bite as a 2D cross-section — handy for checking tight contacts you can’t see from the outside.

Drag across the model to place the cut. A panel opens showing the cross-section, which you can pan and zoom on its own.

To measure, click two points on the cross-section and Bite-Finder shows the distance between them in millimetres.

Quality report

See how well your adjusted bite fits

The quality report scores how well the bite fits after adjustment and compares it to the original. Open it with Q.

It shows:

  • An overall score with a plain-language verdict — Excellent, Good, or Needs Improvement.
  • The key measurements, each shown before and after the adjustment so you can see what changed.

You can download the full report as a PDF to keep or share.

Appearance & transparency

Adjust how your scans look for easier inspection

You can change how scans look in the 3D view to make them easier to inspect. These are display-only settings — they don’t change your result.

  • Shading — pick a finish: Matte, Clay, Balanced, or Glossy.
  • Colour — choose a base colour from the presets or pick your own.
  • Wireframe — show the mesh as an outline instead of a solid surface.
  • Transparency — make a jaw see-through so you can look at what’s behind it.

Bite-Finder can also make a jaw transparent automatically depending on your viewing angle.

Orientation

View your case as scanned or straight-on

Orientation controls how your case sits in the 3D view. It’s a toggle between:

  • the scan’s original position, as it came from the scanner, and
  • a straight-on frontal view — Bite-Finder’s standard orientation.

Switch between them anytime from the tool rail. It only changes the view, not your result.

Adjusting the bite

Open the bite by distance or thickness

The Bite tool lets you open the bite — add space between the upper and lower jaw — on the current result. Two ways:

  • By distance — open the bite by a set amount at the front (the vertical dimension, VDO).
  • By thickness — keep a minimum gap across the whole biting surface, so there’s enough material everywhere.

Open it from the tool rail while reviewing a result.

⚠️

Not available for xSNAP results.

Top bar

Switch between cases and reach every area

The bar across the top of the window is how you move between cases and open the main areas of the app.

  • Case tabs — each open case is a tab; switch between them or start a new case.
  • Recent Cases — reopen a case you worked on before.
  • Case Inbox — see cases shared from your scanner.
  • On the desktop app, a Processing menu lets you start batch or serial runs.

On the right you’ll find your account menu (preferences, subscription, help, and sign out), What’s New, and your Bite balance.

Tool rail

Find the right tool for each step

The row of icons on the right edge holds the tools for whatever you’re doing right now. Which tools appear changes depending on whether you’re setting up a case or reviewing a result.

You’ll find:

  • Orientation — how the case sits in the view.
  • Marking — guide the bite calculation.
  • Cut view — slice through the jaws.
  • Quality report — score the result.
  • Compare / Split / Fold — check the result against the original.
  • Bite — open the bite on a result.

Each icon has a keyboard shortcut — hover over it to see it.

Sidebar

Show, hide, and compare everything in your case

The panel on the left lists everything in your case — the jaws, scans, and any extras.

  • Click the eye next to an object to show it, hide it, or make it see-through.
  • Switch between the original scan and each calculated solution here, so you can compare different results for the same case.

You can collapse the sidebar to a narrow strip of icons when you want more room for the 3D view.

Batch processing

Run a whole folder of cases automatically

📝

Desktop app only — it needs access to your file system.

Batch processing runs many cases for you from a folder, so you don’t have to open them one at a time.

Point Bite-Finder at an input folder where each case sits in its own subfolder (the files inside are sorted just like the normal loading screen). Bite-Finder picks up new cases, processes them in the background, and — if you want — moves finished ones to an output folder.

You choose how hands-off it is:

  • Processing — start cases automatically, or only when you say so.
  • Review — with a quality threshold (85% by default): on Auto, cases that pass move to the output folder on their own; on Manual, they wait for you to approve or reject them in Batch review.

The Report shows how the whole batch turned out at a glance.

💡

Batch waits until a folder has finished copying before it starts, so it never grabs a half-copied case.

Batch review

Review each result and decide what to keep

Batch review lets you approve results one at a time after a batch has processed.

Each finished case opens like a normal case so you can look it over and Accept or Reject it.

Your choices are collected as you go and only take effect when you click Apply: accepted cases move to the output folder, and rejected ones stay in the input folder for a manual re-run, until you’re happy with them.

Serial processing

Work through cases in place, no waiting between them

📝

Desktop app only.

A serial run works through a folder of cases one after another, saving each result back into its own folder, so you review and finish every case in place.

The clever part: while you check one case, the next ones are already processing in the background — so there’s never a wait between cases.

You can run several series at once, each in its own tab with its own queue, and pause or resume any of them whenever you like.

💡

Batch or serial? Use serial to work through cases in place and finish each one yourself. Use batch to run a large set hands-off, then come back later to review, report, and move cases to an output folder.

Recent cases

Find and reopen any case you’ve processed

Recent Cases is your history of processed cases.

Search by name, ID, user, or tag, and filter the list by status or quality. Double-click a case to reopen it.

You can switch between your cases and all users in your organization, and between cases made in the app and those created through the API.

If a case was refunded, opening it brings back your original scan files.

Case tags

Know at a glance what happened to each case

Tags are the small coloured labels on each case that tell you at a glance what happened to it. They’re grouped by colour — for the jobs that ran, the data involved, and the tools used. Hover a tag to see the details.

Some tags explain the result. For example:

  • Open Bite — a bite opening was applied to the case; nothing for you to do.
  • A refund tag means a quality check wasn’t met and the credit was returned automatically. This mainly applies to cases created through the API (which have no manual review) — you can filter for them and re-run them to finish.

Scanner inbox

Download new scanner cases as they arrive

The scanner inbox shows cases your intraoral scanner has shared to your cloud account (iTero, Medit, Shining 3D, and others). Cases appear automatically after a patient is scanned.

Download a case to open it directly in Bite-Finder.

On the desktop app you can also download all new cases at once into a folder — on demand, or automatically every few minutes so new cases arrive on their own. Cases you’ve already handled are remembered and skipped.

⚠️

Don’t see your cases? Your scanner account needs connecting first — see Connecting your scanner.

Preferences

Set your defaults once and sync them across devices

Open Preferences from the account menu in the top-right. Your settings are saved to your account, so they follow you between devices. Preferences is organized into a few areas:

General

  • Language — the language the app is shown in.
  • Processing animation — what you see while a case processes (a spinner, a fun animation, or a small game).

Project Settings — defaults applied to every new case:

  • Start screen — pick a preset to open automatically and skip the menu.
  • Maximal penetration — the default overlap allowance for new cases.
  • Automatic segmentation — lets Bite-Finder tell teeth from gums to improve precision when you send a case without your own markings. Your manual markings always take priority.

Export Settings — defaults for saving and exporting: mesh file type, jaw-motion format, coordinate system, and which files to include.

Rendering — how meshes look. See Appearance & transparency.

Integrations — connect lab and scanner services. See Sending to a lab.

Hotkeys — view the keyboard shortcuts.

Diagnostics — system information, handy when contacting support.

Soon

Custom workflows

Automate your whole case process, your way

ℹ️

Coming soon.

Today you start from a preset — a ready-made group of case settings (see Starting a case).

Workflows will build on presets by adding your own automations — custom steps, conditions, and logic — so a whole case process can run the way you define it. This isn’t available yet.

SprintRay

Send finished cases straight to SprintRay

Instead of saving files to your computer, you can send a finished case straight to your SprintRay inbox.

From the save screen, choose Send Case and pick your partner. A progress screen shows the upload and lets you open the partner’s cloud when it’s done.

💡

First time? The SprintRay connection is set up once in your organization’s Control Center, on the integrations page: bite-finder.com/control-center/integrations.

Connecting your scanner

Link your scanner so scans arrive automatically

To see your scanner’s cases in the scanner inbox, your scanner cloud account has to be connected to Bite-Finder.

This is done once by your organization admin in the Control Center, on the integrations page: bite-finder.com/control-center/integrations.

Once connected, new patient scans are pulled into your inbox automatically.

Updating Bite-Finder

Keep Bite-Finder current and see what’s new

Bite-Finder tells you when a new version is available.

Open the updater to see what’s new, then Download & Install — Bite-Finder downloads the update, installs it, and restarts for you.

Some updates are required and need to be installed before you can keep working.

💡

You can revisit what changed in any release from the What’s New page, opened from the top bar.

Your Bite balance

Understand what your Bites cost and cover

A Bite is one processing credit. Your balance is shared across your whole organization and shown in the top bar.

  • Processing a case costs 1 Bite.
  • Re-running a case on the same scans is free.
  • If you refund a case, the Bite is returned.

Top up your balance on bite-finder.com.
